How a friend got drugged in Brazil

This is an excerpt from a friend's recent prayer letter. Thought you might enjoy it..

"After an early morning arrival in Brazil I caught the bus to Rio de Janeiro. I spoke to numerous people on the bus as one does in Brazil. At 3 pm we stopped for lunch in a small town called Lorena. When I stood up from the table, I realized that someone had drugged me somehow. My mind became totally confused and cloudy. I panicked as I was alone and vulnerable for anything to happen if I were to pass out. I grabbed my cell phone out of the pocket and managed to page my wife in Canada. She called me back immediately and said "Call an ambulance now!"

The manager of the bus station called the ambulance and got my luggage off the bus. When the ambulance arrived they took my blood pressure - 200/120 (!) I have a minor heart condition so it was a very dangerous and potentially lethal situation. They took me to the emergency ward and after various treatments and five hours later, my blood pressure was still the same. Finally by 9pm that same day, it had finally returned to normal. The friends who I was going to minister with in Rio had contacted local church leaders who came to the hospital to take care of me. I stayed at their home that evening and the next day had to get on the same bus to get to Rio.

I realized that I had been targeted to be robbed by a couple on the bus claiming to be believers. They were very clever in building up credibility (even wearing a Jesus T-Shirt). They offered me a piece of chewing gum on board the bus and two seconds after I took it, I turned my head aside and spat it out as I realized something wasn't right (It took a few seconds in all my tiredness to remember not to take candy from strangers!!). I can't imagine the effect that it would have had if I wouldn't have spat it out. Thank God for His protection! I went on to have a great time of ministry in Brazil speaking in the oldest evangelical church in the country (in Rio) and then at the first ever missions conference at a huge church in Salvador. Many people responded to the challenge to be involved in mission - especially many of the youth."
